Route Description: From Vierli to Vierlinuten

The hike starts at Vierli Cafeteria. Follow the well-marked trail leading up to the summit of Vierlinuten. Here, you will find the captivating sculpture "Vidsyn," a natural spot for reflection and photography.

After experiencing the sculpture, the trail continues across the ridge toward Oksatjønn. The terrain is varied; some sections are improved with gravel, while others follow natural paths. Wooden boardwalks are placed across marshy areas to keep your feet dry.

Tip: Looking for a longer hike? The trail can easily be extended by joining the Silkeldalen loop (an additional 4 km).

The Vidsyn Sculpture: An Optical Wonder

Perched atop Vierlinuten is the sculpture Vidsyn, created by artist Hilde Mæhlum. This is no ordinary statue—it is designed to challenge your brain:

The Inverted Nose: The face of the sculpture is actually concave (the nose points inward). However, if you step back and squint, your brain will "correct" the image, making the nose appear to point outward.

The Following Eyes: If you walk slowly past while keeping your eyes on the sculpture, it will seem as if the eyes are following you—whether you are standing to the east or the west.

Views of World Heritage and Lake Møsvatn

From Vidsyn, you have a panoramic view of Lake Møsvatn, a central part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. This area carries a dramatic history:

• The Industrial Adventure: The damming of Møsvatn over 100 years ago laid the foundation for hydropower development in Rjukan and Notodden, playing a vital role in the rise of the Norwegian welfare state.
• The Hidden History: Beneath the surface of the water lie old farms, summer pastures (staular), and grazing lands that were submerged. The damming turned the inhabitants of this mountain village into "islanders" in a roadless community, where the water serves as the main road in both summer and winter.
