The Vinje Center is a national museum dedicated to literature and journalism. Here, you will encounter the lives and works of four iconic Norwegian authors: Aasmund Olavsson Vinje, Aslaug Vaa, Tarjei Vesaas, and Halldis Moren Vesaas.
The center offers engaging exhibitions, digital installations, and activities for the whole family. Explore the world of media literacy through interactive games, relax in our cozy reading nook, or let the children enjoy our dedicated kids' trail.
Located right next to the center is the charming Vinjestoga. This is where the journalist and poet Aasmund Olavsson Vinje grew up, and much of the original interior from his time remains preserved.
Guided Tours: Available from May to November (must be booked in advance).
In the summer of 2026, the Vinje Center opens the doors to Midtbø. This was the home where the literary couple Halldis Moren Vesaas and Tarjei Vesaas created the majority of their life's work. Experience the atmosphere of a house that for decades served as a hub for Norwegian and international cultural life.
Opening Hours for Guided Tours at Midtbø:
June 21 – July 12: Tours hosted by the Vesaas family.
Tuesday–Sunday: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
July 14 – August 16: Tours hosted by the Vinje Center.
Tuesday–Sunday: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Take part in Vinjerevla, a unique community project in collaboration with the Vinje Handcraft Association. Guests can help embroider a 12.5-meter-long tapestry based on the epic poem Storegut (1866). The stitching is so simple that everyone can participate!
Opening Hours for Vinjerevla:
February – April: Wednesdays, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
June 22 – August 16: Daily, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
The Vinje Center is a vibrant venue with events throughout the year. The annual highlight is the Litteraturdagane (Literature Days) festival, held the last weekend of September every year.
