About

Falkeriset is one of the most popular family hikes in the Rauland region. Thanks to the beautiful stone steps meticulously laid by Sherpa teams from Nepal, the trail is both durable and easy to navigate. The hike leads you from the mountain birch forest up to a spectacular viewpoint on the high plateau, offering panoramic vistas of the Hardangervidda mountain plain and the majestic Gaustatoppen.

Quick Facts

  • Difficulty: Moderate (easy ascent on stone steps)
  • Distance: 3 km (round trip)
  • Time: Approx. 1 hour
  • Elevation Gain: 146 meters (950–1096 m above sea level)
  • Season: June – October (Kromvikvegen road opens June 1st)
  • Suitable for: Children, seniors, and hikers of all ages

Route Description: A Path Set in Stone

The hike begins directly at the impressive stone staircase located at the parking lot.

  1. The Ascent: The Sherpa steps make the climb easy and provide a steady incline. By following the steps, you help protect the fragile alpine environment from erosion and prevent the formation of new, muddy trails.
  2. The Viewpoint: Once you reach the treeless plateau, the landscape opens up. From here, you have an expansive view of Hardangervidda National Park and Lake Møsvatn.
  3. Local History: The name "Falkeriset" originates from falconry (falcon catching) that took place here in earlier centuries—a fascinating story to share with children along the way!

Practical Information and Access

How to get there: From Rauland center, follow Rv 362 toward Haukeli for 4 km. Turn right toward Kromviki. Follow the gravel road (Kromvikvegen) for 11 km until you reach the parking lot on the left side.

Parking: Free parking at the trailhead.

Important Road Info: Kromvikvegen is a seasonal road that typically opens on June 1st. It closes when the first snow arrives (usually October or November).

Respect Nature and Wildlife

Falkeriset is an active grazing area and hunting ground. Please remember:

  • Dogs on a leash: Sheep graze in this area. Off-leash dogs can harass lambs and separate them from their mothers. Please strictly observe the national leash laws (April 1st – August 20th) and show extra caution outside this period.
  • Hunting Season: Be aware that grouse hunting takes place in the area starting September 10th.
  • Leave No Trace: Stay on the stone steps to preserve the vegetation and always carry your trash back home.
