About

Discover the mountain formation "Himmelriket" (Heaven's Kingdom) at Gautefallheia in Drangedal – one of nature's own masterpieces in Telemark. This unique hiking destination features spectacular bedrock formations carved out by glaciers from the last Ice Age. The result is a magnificent structure resembling a giant, Roman amphitheatre, crafted entirely by nature. The hike is relatively easy and offers a fantastic experience of Norwegian wilderness.

Access and Parking (Starting Point: Gautefall Ski Resort)

The trip starts easily from the Gautefall Ski Resort in Drangedal.

  • Driving Directions: Follow the signs toward Gautefall Skisenter on County Road 358 (Fylkesvei 358).
  • Parking: Parking is available on the left side when approaching from the direction of Drangedal.
  • Trailhead: Walk beneath the road towards the hotel. You will find the marked trail between the Red Cross cabin (Røde Kors-hytta) and the Gautefall mountain church (Fjellkirke).

Trail Description: Blue-Marked Path

The hike begins at the Gautefall Ski Resort parking lot and proceeds northwards.

  • Route: Walk behind the snow cannon facility and cross the bridge over Langmyrbekken stream.
  • Marking: The trail is blue-marked (Blåmerket) all the way to Himmelriket.
  • Return: You can choose to follow the same path back (blue-marked).
  • Round Trip: For a round trip option, it is possible to follow the red-marked trail (Rødmerket) back from Himmelriket.

Important Information and Responsible Hiking

To preserve the unique bedrock of Himmelriket and the surrounding nature:

  • Campfires: NOTE! It is not permitted to light fires directly on the bedrock (svaberg) as this can cause permanent damage to the natural elements.
  • Preservation: When moving through nature, it is crucial to practice responsible hiking. Stick to the marked trails, pack out all trash, and respect local rules and restrictions.
  • More Info: If you wish to look for other great hiking destinations in Drangedal, you can find more information on the websites of Gautefall Turlag (Gautefall Hiking Association).
