About

Rjukan is a small town with rich history, and is now on UNESCO World Herritage list.

Sam Eyde's purchase of Rjukanfossen and Norsk Hydro's establishment marked the beginning of the energy story in Norway. Then the Second World War came when the world's attention was turned to Rjukan and its bold heavy water saboteurs.

Mount Gastatoppen rises majestically over Rjukan with its 1883 metres above sea level. Every year approx 30 000 people hike to the top where you can see 1/6 of Norway on a clear weather day.
Another possibility to get to the top is to take Gaustabanen.

Gaustabanen is a cable railway inside Mt. Gaustatoppen. It used to be a top secret NATO construction. But now it's possible for everyone to use it.

Hardangervidda National Park Center at Skinnarbu is located at the gateway of one of Europe's largest national park. The wild reindeer exhibition contains 20 interactive installations as well as a movie theatre and cafe with a spectacular view over Hardangervidda.

Krossobanen was the first cable car to be built in northern Europe in 9128. It was a gift from Norsk Hydro to the townspeiole so that they could get up high enough to seee the sun during the winter.

Today Krossobanen is used to ferry tourists to Hardangervidda, either to hike, bike or ski.
