Gaustatoppen rises majestically over Rjukan in Telemark, with its 1883 meters over sea level. The top is easily accessible and easily climbed, but despite this, offers southern Norway`s longest view. On a clear day you can see approximately one sixth of Norway.
The hike up to Gaustatoppen
The tour up starts at Stavsro, on the road between Rjukan and Tuddal. Here you will find a large free parking place. The trail is well-marked with red T´s.
The walk to Gaustatoppen is a family-friendly outing, that is appropriate for children who are active and used to longer walks.
Gaustatoppen Tourist Cabin
On the summit you will find Gaustatoppen Tourist Cabin, which serves delicious waffles. It is also possible to stay overnight in this 100 year old stone cabin. Please note, that accommodations is only upon request. Please call +47 35 09 41 50.
Gaustabanen
Running inside the mountain is Gaustabanen, a combined tramway and funicular, which will carry you up to 1800 meters above sea level. Built by the Norwegian military, it was completed in 1959. The cable railway operates on selected days of the year.
