About

Øysteinnatten is one of the most iconic landmarks in Midt-Telemark and a favorite destination for mountain hikers. The Lifjell plateau offers a diverse landscape, ranging from rugged river gorges and deep valleys to rounded peaks and dramatic cliffs.

Quick Facts:

  • Difficulty: Demanding
  • Distance: 11.5 km (Round trip)
  • Elevation Gain: 533 meters total
  • Season: April – November
  • Peak Elevation: 1174 m above sea level

Route Description: From Jønnbu to the Summit

The hike begins at the Jønnbu parking area. Your first challenge is Krintokleiva, a steep ascent that provides a quick pulse-raiser. After a gentler section, the terrain levels out before you tackle the climbs at Glekse and the wild Tunglijuvet gorge.

As you reach the upper plateau, you are greeted by Skåråfjellholmen, a popular fishing lake and an ideal spot for a break. Nearby, at Sauetjønn to the east, you’ll find excellent spots for wild camping. From here, the trail crosses easier high-mountain terrain before the final ascent to the summit of Øysteinnatten (1174 m).

Panoramic Views

From the moment you leave Jønnbu until you reach the peak, the views are spectacular:

  1. To the South: Overlooking Midt-Telemark and the Grenland region.
  2. To the East: Sights stretching toward the Skrim mountains in Vestfold.
  3. From the Peak: A 360-degree panorama of Lifjell, Blefjell, and the iconic Gaustatoppen.

Fishing and Winter Activities

If you enjoy fishing, both Skåråfjellholmen and Storsteintjønna are known for good catches. The local fishing club, Bø Fiskelag, manages several lakes in the area.

Winter at Lifjell: During winter, the Lifjell trail association prepares cross-country ski tracks. The final stretch from Snotjønnhovet to Øysteinnatten follows a marked (staked) winter trail.

Alternative Return: The Gleksefjell Loop

For a more varied experience, we recommend an alternative route back:

  • Follow the ridge westward toward Skardtjønn. This path is airy and scenic but safe.
  • Descend toward Storsteintjønna and head back up toward Gleksefjell.
  • Tip: A quick detour to Skrubbelinut is highly recommended for the extra views.
  • Finally, descend the steep trail to Tunglijuvet and follow the original path back to the parking lot.

Responsible Hiking and Conservation

To preserve the fragile alpine environment of Lifjell, please practice responsible hiking:

  • Stay on marked trails: Protect the local ecosystems from unnecessary wear and tear.
  • Leave no trace: Always carry your trash home and respect local regulations.
  • Respect wildlife: Avoid disturbing animals and be mindful of protected areas.

By hiking responsibly, you help ensure that future generations can enjoy the same wild beauty of Lifjell.
