Welcome to the Århus Cultural Path, a unique 4.5 km walk that takes you through a rich cultural landscape and an important part of Skien's history. This path, which combines nature and history, starts at the old Århus Farm and winds through an area with deep historical roots.
The walk offers several exciting stops that bring history to life. You will pass Altenburg Århus, where playwright Henrik Ibsen's mother spent her summers. From there, the path continues to the Henrik Ibsen Museum at Venstøp, where the world-renowned dramatist spent eight of his childhood years.
Further along, the path leads to the fascinating rock carving field at Fossum, before reaching Fossum Manor and Fossum Ironworks—Norway's first ironworks. From here, the route takes you via Fossum School and back to the starting point at Århus Farm.
The cultural path, which was established for Skien's 1000-year anniversary in the year 2000, is well-marked with 14 information boards. These boards include maps and interesting facts that enrich the experience. The path is largely accessible and is also suitable for cycling.
A more detailed guide booklet for the path is available at the Skien Tourist Office.
Århus Farm is more than just a starting point. The farm, likely established during the Iron Age, is now home to a reconstructed Iron Age Farm with three houses, completed in 2005. Here you'll also find 19 burial mounds, a carp pond with a replica of a dugout canoe, and a rock collection. It's the perfect place to get a glimpse into ancient Norwegian history.
To preserve this unique cultural landscape and the surrounding nature, it's important to travel responsibly. Follow the marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and take all your trash with you. By showing respect for your surroundings, you help preserve the path's beauty for all who follow.
