About

Toreskyrkja is a prominent mountain peak rising 1,371 meters above sea level in the massif between Kvitåvatn, Gaustablikk, and Heddersvatn. This hike is perfect for those seeking a more challenging alternative to the classic Gaustatoppen trail, offering panoramic views of Tuddal, southern Telemark, and a stunning perspective of Gaustatoppen itself.

Key Hike Information:

  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Distance: Approx. 3 km one way (6 km round trip)
  • Duration: Approx. 2 hours one way
  • Elevation Gain: Total of 433 meters (starting at 958 m)
  • Terrain: High mountain, hilly, boulder fields, and narrow trails
  • Season: Typically June – October (weather dependent)
  • Suitable for: Adults and experienced hikers

Trail Description

The hike starts at Kvitåvatnet and follows a T-marked trail. Please note that this route is technically more demanding than the popular trail from Stavsro to Gaustatoppen.

Water and Cooling Off: Much of the trail follows a stream valley, providing several opportunities to refill your water bottle or enjoy a quick splash in the cold mountain water.

Terrain and Equipment: As the trail traverses high mountain terrain and sections of large boulders, hiking boots with good ankle support are essential for a safe and comfortable trip.

The View: From the summit, you are rewarded with a unique vantage point. You have a direct line of sight to the iconic Gaustatoppen, as well as the vast mountain ranges stretching south through Telemark.

Directions and Parking

How to get there:

  1. Follow FV 651 from either Rjukan or Tuddal toward Gaustatoppen.
  2. At Svineroi, follow the signs for "Destinasjon Gaustatoppen" and Gaustablikk Høyfjellshotell.
  3. Park at the ski center’s parking lot and follow Kvitåvatnvegen to Vatnedalen.

Alternative route: The hike can also be started from Heddersvatn (refer to ut.no for details).
Important: Please show consideration when parking and use designated spaces only.
