About

Gaustatoppen (1,883 m.a.s.l.) rises majestically above the town of Rjukan in Telemark and is often referred to as Norway’s most beautiful mountain. On clear days, you can see nearly one-sixth of the entire country from the summit – a view unlike any other in Norway. The mountain is easily accessible and family-friendly, yet also offers more challenging routes for experienced hikers.

Views and Experiences at the Summit

At the top, you’ll find Gaustatoppen Tourist Cabin, a serviced DNT cabin built from local stone back in 1893. Here, visitors can enjoy simple refreshments, and during summer it’s possible to stay overnight to experience both sunset and sunrise from Norway’s widest panoramic viewpoint.

Routes to Gaustatoppen

1. Stavsro – Gaustatoppen (most popular route)

  • Length: approx. 4.3 km one way
  • Elevation gain: approx. 700 m
  • Time: 2–4 hours up (5–7 hours round trip)
  • Difficulty: Moderate

This is the most popular and family-friendly route, suitable for active children with some hiking experience. The trail is wide and well-marked all the way to the top.

2. Gaustabanen – the shortest way to the top

The Gaustabanen is a spectacular railway inside the mountain, built during the Cold War. The journey begins with a tram ride 800 meters into the mountain, followed by a steep funicular climbing at a 40-degree angle. From the base station to the summit, the ride takes only 15 minutes. This trip is perfect for families and visitors who prefer not to hike all the way up.

3. Rjukan – Gaustatoppen

  • Length: approx. 12 km one way
  • Elevation gain: approx. 1,600 m
  • Time: 6–9 hours up, 10–15 hours round trip
  • Difficulty: Difficult

A demanding trail best suited for well-trained and experienced hikers.

4. Selstali – Gaustatoppen

A steep and partly exposed route that leads through the beautiful Gausdalen valley and Telemark’s highest-lying pine forest. Best for experienced hikers with strong endurance.

5. Svineroi – Gaustatoppen

A challenging route with plenty of scree and exposed sections in poor weather. Recommended only for seasoned mountaineers.

Best Time to Visit Gaustatoppen

The ideal season to climb Gaustatoppen is July through September. During peak season, especially late July and early August, the trail from Stavsro can be crowded. For a more unique experience, start your hike early in the morning or late in the afternoon to enjoy the sunrise or sunset from the summit.

Practical Information

  • Driving directions: From Rjukan center, follow RV 37 to Dale (approx. 4 km). Then take FV 651 towards the Gausta area for 13 km to Stavsro.
  • Parking: Large parking areas at Stavsro; limited spaces at Svineroi and Selstali.
  • Accommodation: Numerous cabins, apartments, and hotels in the Gausta area in all price ranges. See www.visitrjukan.no for more information.

Protect the Nature

When exploring the mountain, please respect the environment. Stick to marked trails, avoid stepping on fragile vegetation, and always carry your waste back with you. Gaustatoppen is a national treasure, and it is our shared responsibility to preserve it for future generations.

Why You Should Visit Gaustatoppen

Gaustatoppen offers one of the most spectacular mountain experiences in Norway. Whether you choose the family-friendly route from Stavsro, a short ride with Gaustabanen, or a demanding hike from Rjukan, an unforgettable panoramic view awaits at the summit.
