About

Gaustatoppen (1883 meters above sea level) towers majestically above Rjukan in Telemark and is often described as Norway’s most beautiful mountain. This iconic peak is easy to access and relatively simple to climb, yet it rewards hikers with the widest panoramic view in Southern Norway. On a clear day, you can see nearly one-sixth of the entire country – an experience that makes Gaustatoppen one of Norway’s most popular hikes.

The Hike from Stavsro to Gaustatoppen

The most popular and family-friendly route to Gaustatoppen begins at Stavsro, located about 1100 m.a.s.l. along the road between Rjukan and Tuddal. Here you’ll find a paid parking lot, though spaces are limited during the high season.

The parking fee can be paid by Vipps or machine. It is important not to park along the roadside, as this may result in towing or damage to your vehicle. Cars must always be parked within the marked white line. If Stavsro is full, alternative parking is available at Svineroi or “Bygget” in the Gausta area.

The Trail – Clearly Marked with Red T’s

From Stavsro, the elevation gain is around 700 meters. The trail is broad, visible, and well-marked with the classic red “T” painted on stones along the route. The terrain consists mainly of rocks of various sizes. Many hikers take part in the tradition of picking up a stone on the way and placing it on one of the cairns marking the trail to the summit – a simple gesture that adds to the experience.

As you ascend, the landscape gradually opens up, offering increasingly spectacular views. From the trail you can see the mountains of Telemark, Buskerud, and as far as Oslomarka. The final section along the northern ridge offers stunning 360-degree views, with the Hardangervidda plateau stretching magnificently to the west.

A Family-Friendly Summit Hike in Telemark

The hike to Gaustatoppen is a true classic among Norwegian summit hikes and is well-suited for adults, experienced children, and families used to uneven mountain terrain. It combines easy access with unforgettable views.

Responsible Hiking in the Mountains

When hiking to Gaustatoppen, it is important to respect nature. Always stay on the marked trail (red T), bring your trash back down, and respect local wildlife.

Keep in mind that the weather on Gaustatoppen can change quickly – sunshine may turn to fog and strong winds in a matter of minutes. Be sure to pack windproof and waterproof clothing, as well as sun protection, regardless of the forecast.

The trail consists of loose rocks and uneven terrain, so sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. The best season to hike Gaustatoppen is from July to September, when the trail is snow-free and conditions are safe.
