14 kmLårdalstigen is widely considered one of Norway’s most fantastic hiking experiences. The trail follows the mountain ridge between Dalen and Lårdal, featuring dramatic cliffs that plunge up to 800 meters straight down into the Telemark Canal. This is a hike for those seeking wild nature, spectacular vistas, and a technical challenge.
Trail Facts:
Distance: 14 km (one way)
Duration: 6–8 hours
Difficulty: Challenging / Expert
Highest Point: Gløstøylnuten (848 m.a.s.l.)
Season: May – October (weather dependent)
The trail offers a unique combination of geology and rich flora. Along the way, you will encounter several fascinating landmarks:
Most hikers prefer starting at Eidsborgberget above Dalen and hiking toward Lårdal. This provides the best views and makes it easier to catch the afternoon canal boat back.
Parking: Free long-term parking is available at the Dalen pier area (opposite the campervan site).
Shuttle to Start: Contact Tokke Taxi (+47 909 71 909) for a fixed-price transfer the 4 km up to the starting point at Eidsborgberget.
Start Early: We recommend starting between 08:00 and 09:00 to ensure you arrive in Lårdal in time for the afternoon boat.
A voyage on the historic canal boats M/S Victoria or M/S Henrik Ibsen is an essential part of the experience.
Booking: We strongly recommend pre-booking your tickets at booktelemark.no.
Alternative: If the boats are fully booked or it is outside the sailing season, Tokke Taxi offers fixed-price transfers between Lårdal and Dalen.
For those wishing to split the hike into two days, you can stay at Heddebu, a small cabin located just before the steep descent into Lårdal. It is open to hikers and sleeps two people (drop-in). Don't forget to sign the guestbook!
If the full 14 km is too demanding, you can drive to Støylsdalen and hike a 6 km loop over Gløstøylnuten (848 m.a.s.l.) and back.
