2.7 kmExplore the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site on this charming and accessible loop. This walk combines the scenic nature of the Vestfjorddalen valley with the unique industrial architecture of Rjukan.
Hike Overview:
The tour can be started at several points, but we recommend beginning at Rjukan Square (Torget), conveniently located right by the Tourist Information office.
Along the Måna River: Start your walk along the Måna River, following the path up toward Rallarparken and Sam Eydes gate, just below the historic Admini building.
Through the Historic Streets: Follow Sam Eydes gate to Folkets Hus (the cinema building). Continue into Storstulgata, then via Bøensgata into Storgata, and finally into Skriugata.
Kjærlighetsstien (The Lovers' Path): At the end of Skriugata, ascend the stone stairs leading to the famous Kjærlighetsstien. You are now entering the Vestfjorddalen Nature Reserve.
Challenge: For an extra workout, follow the signposted trail from the mountainside up to the old Soapstone Quarry.
Return via Rjukan Church: At the end of Kjærlighetsstien, take the stairs down the slope by Rjukan Hospital. Follow Sykehusvegen past Rjukan Church, cross the pedestrian walk at Sam Eydes gate, and head back down to the river.
Finishing the Loop: After passing the dam, turn right to return to Torget. Alternatively, you can continue back to the starting point at Rallarparken.
This route is perfect for those who want a relaxing stroll in a historic setting. You will experience iconic landmarks like the Rjukan Church and Admini, while enjoying the fresh air in the forest fringes along the "Lovers' Path."
Traveler's Tip: With plenty of seating along the way, this is the ideal route for a coffee break while admiring the steep mountainsides surrounding the town.
As parts of this walk pass through the Vestfjorddalen Nature Reserve, practicing responsible travel is essential. To protect and respect the natural environment, please stay on the marked trails and ensure you carry all your trash back with you. By avoiding the disturbance of local wildlife and following regional regulations, you help maintain the beauty and sustainability of Rjukan’s nature for future generations to enjoy.
