Gygrestolen has long been the most iconic landmark in Bø, Telemark. This distinct rock formation, featuring a massive stone "chair," a sprawling scree field, and two giant boulders, was carved out by the forces of the last ice age.
Trip Facts:
Gygrestolen is more than just a geological wonder; it is steeped in local folklore. According to legend, a giantess named Gygra sat here. In a fit of rage over the arrival of Christianity in the village, she hurled massive boulders at the local Gåra Church. It is said that the day the "chair" collapses into Lake Uvdalstjønna, the world will come to an end.
The hike up to the plateau is steep and rewarding, making it ideal for hikers in good physical condition.
Safety Note: Due to high traffic, parts of the trail are worn with exposed roots and stones. These sections can become slippery and challenging after rain or when temperatures hover around freezing.
On the way down, the trail passes through valuable old-growth forest filled with birdsong. A highlight of the descent is the viewpoint at Maurknatten, which offers a unique perspective of the wild precipices directly beneath the "chair."
