About

Gygrestolen has long been the most iconic landmark in Bø, Telemark. This distinct rock formation, featuring a massive stone "chair," a sprawling scree field, and two giant boulders, was carved out by the forces of the last ice age.

Trip Facts:

  • Distance: 7 km (loop trail)
  • Duration: Approximately 3–4 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 365 meters
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (steep sections)

The Legend of Gygra: The End of the World

Gygrestolen is more than just a geological wonder; it is steeped in local folklore. According to legend, a giantess named Gygra sat here. In a fit of rage over the arrival of Christianity in the village, she hurled massive boulders at the local Gåra Church. It is said that the day the "chair" collapses into Lake Uvdalstjønna, the world will come to an end.

Trail Description: From Dense Forest to Open Ridges

The hike up to the plateau is steep and rewarding, making it ideal for hikers in good physical condition.

  • The Ascent: The first part of the hike leads through dense forest before transitioning into smooth rock slopes (svaberg) and open pine forests on the plateau.
  • Svarttjønn and the Secret Cave: Once you reach Lake Svarttjønn, the steepest climbs are behind you. Look for a peculiar two-story cave on the northwest side of the lake.
  • A Refreshing Dip: On warm summer days, take a short detour to Lake Venetjønn for a cooling swim before continuing to the main Gygrestolen cliff.
  • The Viewpoint: From the cliff edge, you have a panoramic view of the massive stone debris (the scree) and the beautiful cultural landscape of Telemark.

Safety Note: Due to high traffic, parts of the trail are worn with exposed roots and stones. These sections can become slippery and challenging after rain or when temperatures hover around freezing.

The Descent: Ancient Forest and Maurknatten

On the way down, the trail passes through valuable old-growth forest filled with birdsong. A highlight of the descent is the viewpoint at Maurknatten, which offers a unique perspective of the wild precipices directly beneath the "chair."

Responsible Travel and Conservation

Gygrestolen is a popular destination, and we all share the responsibility of protecting this environment:

  • Stay on the Marked Path: Follow the markers from Bø Turlag to prevent further erosion and damage to the ecosystem.
  • Leave No Trace: Always carry your trash back home.
  • Respect Wildlife: Avoid disturbing birds and animals, especially in protected areas.
