Røyrodden is an idyllic, family-friendly gem located just north of Treungen. This varied loop takes you to the sparkling shores of Lake Nisser, through lush groves with thousand-year-old oak trees, and past mystical burial mounds from the Iron Age. It is a hike where children can play at being Vikings while adults soak in the views.

Route Description: Two Experience-Filled Loops

The trail is designed as a figure-eight, making it easy to choose how far you want to walk.

Loop 1: Røyrodden and Lake Nisser (Short Route - 1.3 km)

This section leads down to the banks of Lake Nisser. Here you’ll find a great swimming spot—perfect for warm summer days. The trail continues up to Røyråsen, where you can sign the guestbook for a chance to win prizes from the local sports club (Treungen IL).

Loop 2: Åraksåsen and Forest Serenity (Long Route - 3.2 km total)

This loop heads into the forest toward the traditional Årak farms. You’ll hike through terrain rich in blueberries and lingonberries, and with a little luck, you might spot tracks from moose, roe deer, foxes, or capercaillie. At the top of Åraksåsen, you are rewarded with a lovely view of Treungen.

Experience the Viking Age and Historic Oaks

Røyrodden is rich in cultural heritage that adds an extra dimension to the hike:

Thousand-Year-Old Oaks: On the other side of the main road, you can explore a unique grove featuring oak trees nearly 1,000 years old.

Burial Mounds and Viking Finds: The area contains 15 Iron Age burial mounds and remains of old crofter's cottages. Archaeological finds such as spearheads, horse gear, and tools dating back to the Viking Age confirm this as historical ground.

Practical Information and Access

  • Starting Point: 1.7 km north of Treungen center.
  • Parking: Located on the south side of Highway 41 (Riksveg 41), directly above the farm road to Årak.
  • Facilities: Several nice resting spots and picnic areas are located along the route.
