Route Description: From Rushing Waters to Artistic Treasures

The trail offers a varied hike where nature and culture melt together.

  1. Along the River and Waterfalls: The hike starts at Mjonøy and follows the river through a beautiful forested area. Here, you will encounter impressive waterfalls and a canyon-like landscape—perfect for photography.
    • Tip: On warm summer days, Kleivastøylhylen is the perfect spot for a refreshing dip in the river.
  2. Smørklepp Art Museum: Hidden in the woods, the gallery reveals itself—an architectural gem dedicated to the painters Henrik Sørensen and Harald Kihle. The gallery houses a large collection of their atmospheric nature paintings and depictions of traditional life in Telemark.
  3. Return to Mjonøy: The loop ends where it began. Treat yourself to the scent of fresh bread from the stone oven or enjoy a hearty meal at the Mjonøy café.

Experiences Along the Way

  • Mjonøy: A vibrant cultural hub with a bakery, handicraft shop, and accommodation in traditional wooden storehouses ("loft" and "bur"). It’s the ideal place to taste authentic Telemark traditions.
  • Smørklepp Art Museum: Experience art exactly where it was created. Henrik Sørensen spent 40 summers here, and the unique light of Vinje’s nature permeates his work.
  • Vinjestoga: Nearby, you can visit the childhood home of the famous Norwegian author and journalist Aasmund Olavsson Vinje.

Practical Information

  • Start Point: Mjonøy in Vinje, located right off the E134 highway.
  • Dining: The café at Mjonøy is open during the summer season and is highly recommended for a bite before or after your hike.
  • Gear: Standard hiking shoes are sufficient, but bring swimwear if the sun is shining!

Responsible Travel

To preserve the beautiful nature and cultural environment of Smørklepp:

  • Stay on the marked trail: This protects the forest floor and the fragile terrain near the river.
  • Respect the cultural heritage: The gallery and historic buildings are unique treasures—please handle the surroundings with care.
  • Leave no trace: Bring all trash back to Mjonøy so the next hiker can enjoy the same pristine nature.
