Experience a unique blend of industrial heritage, rare geology, and scenic landscapes on this family-friendly cycling route in Ulefoss. This tour takes you through the heart of the Fen Volcanic Complex (Fensfeltet), starting at the historic cultural site of Øvre Verket.
Length: Approx. 12 km
Duration: Approx. 45 minutes (cycling time)
Difficulty: Easy / Family-friendly
Start/End Point: Øvre Verket, Ulefoss
The tour begins at Øvre Verket, a collection of vibrant red-painted workers' dwellings from the early 1800s. These were originally built by the Cappelen family for the laborers at Ulefoss Ironworks. Protected as a cultural monument since 1982, the area now serves as a gateway to the region’s history. You will find cycling information and route signs posted on site.
The path leads you past the Ulefoss Guest Harbor, where boats traveling the Telemark Canal dock for the night. During the summer season, you can enjoy the sandy beach and purchase snacks at the kiosk. Shortly after, you will reach the Øra rest area, featuring:
As you cycle along Grønvoldveien, you enter one of Europe's most significant geological sites.
Rare Minerals: Look for Fenite, a light-colored rock transformed by the intense heat of the ancient Fen Volcano.
Mining Heritage: The area contains remnants of centuries of mining, including 1950s niobium extraction. Deep below lies Norway’s largest deposit of thorium.
After approximately 2 km, turn onto the gravel road leading toward Søve Secondary School. This site dates back to 1893 and is rich in archaeological finds. The narrow path through the school grounds is believed to be the same track used by generations of miners commuting to the Gruveåsen mines.
The final leg follows "Gamlevegen" (The Old Road) for 2.2 km, passing the historic iron mines of Gruveåsen.
Note: Be aware of a steep descent toward Grønvoldvegen at the end of the loop.
Swimming: Consider a detour to Torsnes beach for a swim before the cycling path leads you back to Øra and the finish line at Øvre Verket.
