Egderudfossen waterfall is located next to Hjartdal Bygdemølle, creating a beautiful meeting point between cultural heritage and wild nature. Around the waterfall, visitors will find a stone-paved picnic and swimming area, as well as a staircase bridge called “Myllestigen”, offering great views of both the falls and the old mill.
Nature and surroundings
The landscape around Egderudfossen waterfall is lush and scenic, with streams, rocks, moss, and a mix of deciduous and coniferous forest. The movement of the water creates a sense of both energy and tranquility.
The waterfall is part of the Hjartdøla river system, where the water flows through the landscape with shifting strength depending on season and rainfall.
Culturally, the site is of great value, as the mill by the waterfall has been part of local industry and tradition for generations.
To improve accessibility, trails have been built from the old “Kønnmagasinet” down to the falls and the mill, allowing visitors to explore safely and comfortably.
Swimming experience
By the waterfall, a stone-paved area is designed for bathing. Here, you can relax, enjoy the view, or take a refreshing dip in natural rock pools.
The staircase bridge “Myllestigen” not only provides beautiful views but also offers safe access closer to the water.
The water can be chilly, especially outside the warmest months, so swimming should be done with care, keeping in mind currents, slippery rocks, and depth.
Natural bathing spots like this offer a more intimate and authentic experience compared to man-made swimming areas — allowing you to truly sense the sound, chill, and movement of the water.
Activities and visit tips
Picnic: Bring food and relax at the picnic area while enjoying the waterfall and surrounding nature.
Photography: The falls, rock formations, bridge, and mill make for excellent photo opportunities in all seasons. Early mornings and late afternoons give particularly beautiful light.
Short hikes: Take the trail from the old granary down to the falls for the best views and experience of the area.
Cultural insight: Combine your nature experience with a visit to the Bygdemølle and learn about traditional milling.
Best time to visit: Summer, when the water level is moderate, offers the best conditions for swimming. After heavy rain, the stronger water flow may be less suitable for bathing.
