About

Skorve is one of the most distinctive mountain massifs in Telemark. Featuring two prominent peaks, Gøysen and Nordnibba, the mountain offers a challenging but unforgettable trekking experience. Here, you are rewarded not only with a formidable panoramic view but also a close encounter with history: two plane crashes during WWII left wreckage that remains on the mountain today as silent memorials.

Quick Facts

  • Difficulty: Expert / Strenuous (steep terrain)
  • Distance: 10.2 km (Gøysen round trip) or 14 km (full loop via Nordnibba)
  • Time: 5 – 8 hours
  • Terrain: Steep mountain terrain, quickly rising above the tree line
  • Season: June – September
  • Suitable for: Adults and experienced mountain hikers

Route Description: The Peak of Seljord

Hiking Skorve requires sturdy footwear and clothing that can handle rapid weather changes in the mountains.

Option 1: Gøysen Round Trip (10.2 km)

This is the most common route. The hike starts steeply through dense forest before the landscape opens up to fantastic views of the Kivledalen valley.

  • The Plane Wreck: Along the way, you will see signs for the wreckage of an American Liberator bomber. This is a detour of approximately 1 km (round trip) from the main trail.
  • The Summit (1370 m): From the cairn at Gøysen, you can see across almost all of Telemark. Return via the same path to the parking lot.

Option 2: The Grand Loop via Nordnibba (14 km)

For those seeking a longer day trip, you can continue to the second highest peak, Nordnibba (1365 m).

  • Important: The trail between the two peaks is poorly marked, so a map and compass (or GPS) are essential.
  • Logistics: The descent goes through the lush Finndalen valley to Skriustøl. As it is a long walk back along the gravel road, we recommend placing a car at both ends of the trail.

The Plane Crashes on Skorve

Skorve carries a dramatic history from World War II. Two Allied planes crashed here: one near Gøysen and one near Hestenutan. The remains are protected as cultural monuments; we ask all visitors to show respect and leave the wreckage untouched.

Practical Information and Access

  • Starting Point: The parking lot at Haugan in Kivledalen.
  • Directions: From Seljord center, drive 500 m west, turn up Gullnesvegen, and follow this gravel road for about 10 minutes into the Kivledalen valley.

Tip: Download the Fintur app or pick up a physical map at the Seljord Tourist Information before you start.

Responsible Travel in the High Mountains

Skorve is a powerful but fragile massif. To preserve nature and history:

  • Stay on the trail: Avoid unnecessary wear on vulnerable alpine vegetation.
  • Leave no trace: Always carry your trash back home.
  • Safety first: Check the weather forecast carefully. Skorve is highly exposed to wind and changing conditions.
