From Whetstone History to Soria Moria

The tour begins at Lastein (Dalen) Pier. The name "Lastein" literally means "loading stone," as this was the historic shipping point for the famous whetstones from Eidsborg—Norway’s oldest export article. This is also where the historic Telemark Canal boats dock during the summer.

Exploring the "Jungle" of Buøy

From the pier, the path passes a nice swimming beach and crosses the Eidsborg stream. You will walk through Tangane, an idyllic outdoor area with pine forests that offers a unique view of the grand gardens of the historic Dalen Hotel.

After crossing the Tokkeåi river via a stone "stepping-stone" threshold (note: follow the road instead if water levels are high), you reach Buøy. Here, a nature trail leads you through a fascinating, lush landscape.

• Fishing and Wildlife: Along the river, you will find excellent fishing spots and a thriving beaver population. Fishing licenses for Tokkeåi and Bandak can be purchased at fishspot.no.
• Camping: The idyllic Buøy Camping is a fantastic place to set up camp for the night.

Return via Dalen Village Center

The route returns through the center of Dalen, where you can enjoy:

• An intimate shopping street with a flower square, local shops, and cozy cafés.
• Tokke Town Hall: Featuring sculptures by Anne Grimdalen and Charles Michalsen, and a council chamber uniquely clad in local whetstone.
