Børsesjø and its new bird tower (fugleamfi) is an easily accessible nature area with an exceptionally rich birdlife. The area in Skien is known as one of Norway's best birdwatching locations, offering fascinating moments for everyone, whether you are a beginner or an experienced ornithologist.

Birdwatching and Species at Børsesjø

The Børsesjø bird amphitheater is open to the public and is especially popular during the migration periods (spring and autumn). This is when the chance is highest to experience the teeming birdlife up close, from small sparrows to hunting ospreys. More than 230 bird species have been observed in the reserve.

Some of the species you might see include:

• Smew
• Black-tailed Godwit
• Grasshopper Warbler
• Temminck's Stint

This is also a natural gathering point for bird enthusiasts, where you can share knowledge and observe exciting species through telescopes. BirdLife Norway Telemark / Grenland local chapter is based at the amphitheater and organizes activities for all ages.

Universal Design and Accessibility

The Børsesjø bird amphitheater is universally designed (built in 2019) and offers fantastic views from the top. The area is adapted to ensure that everyone can experience nature:

• Access: The entire path from the "Semsmyrene" bus stop is adapted for wheelchair users and strollers.
• Bird Amphitheater: The new amphitheater offers easy access for wheelchairs and strollers.
• Parking: Handicap parking is available right by the bird amphitheater. General parking is limited.

Directions and How to Get There

Børsesjø is best accessed from Gjerpen church.

• By Car/Foot: Follow the marked trail between Gjerpen Nursing Home (Pleiehjem) and the Vicarage (Prestegården) to the bird tower (southwest end) and the bird amphitheater (northwest).
• By Bus: Take bus P7 to the "Semsmyrene" stop. From the stop, follow the blue-marked path along Siljanvegen to the bird amphitheater.

Rules for Conduct in the Nature Reserve

To protect the vulnerable birdlife in the Børsesjø Nature Reserve, the following rules apply (see regulation for a complete overview):

• Access Restrictions: Access in the reserve is not permitted from April 15th to July 1st, except on marked trails.
• Hunting and Fishing: All hunting is prohibited. Fishing is prohibited from March 15th to June 30th.
