Here are 10 of the best places to swim in Telemark – each with its own unique atmosphere.
1. Hydrostranda – coastal charm in Bamble
Hydrostranda is made for long summer days. Build sandcastles with the kids, catch crabs, play football on the grass or find your own sunny spot on the smooth coastal rocks. The surrounding coastal landscape is beautiful and varied, and the seasonal kiosk serves ice cream and cold drinks. Rognstranda Camping is just nearby, perfect for a longer beach holiday.
Facilities: Playground, kiosk (open in summer), lawns and sandy beaches.
Getting there: From E18, take the exit to Europaveien/Fv363, then turn onto Tangvallveien, and follow Rognsveien. Parking is located approx. 400 m from the beach.
2. Fjone in Nissedal – golden beach and ferry adventure
Fjone is home to one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in all of Telemark – shallow, golden and surrounded by mountains and forest. A charming café is located by the ferry dock. On the water, a special experience awaits: Fjoneferja, Norway’s smallest cable ferry, takes you quietly across the narrow strait, offering a tiny voyage full of summer charm.
Facilities: Sandy beach, café and ferry connection.
Getting there: Drive Fjonevegen along the west side of Lake Nisser from Tveitsund or take Rv41 to Framnes and catch the ferry. You'll find several great spots to stop for a swim along the way.
3. Olavsberget in Porsgrunn – a classic fjord favourite
Only 6 km from downtown Porsgrunn, Olavsberget is a beloved local bathing spot. Here, you’ll find everything you need for a great summer day: a gently sloping beach, sun-drenched rocks, green lawns, a diving tower and a floating pier. The area is family-friendly, has HC-accessible toilets, and is easy to reach by car or public transport.

Getting there: 6 km from Porsgrunn. By car: take Rv32 towards E18 and exit before the highway. Bus: Line M2 (see farte.no). Parking approx. 200 m from the beach.
4. Telnessanden in Seljord – one of Norway’s finest lake beaches
By the shores of Seljordsvatnet, you’ll find two long sandy beaches with soft, glacial sand and refreshing water. Telnessanden is often named one of Telemark’s top lake beaches. Enjoy beach volleyball, canoeing, mini-golf or just relaxing with the family. The kiosk serves snacks, and paddleboards are available for rent.

Getting there: Easy access and parking via the south side of Seljordsvatnet.
5. Krogshavn in Langesund – family-friendly coastal retreat
Set in the charming coastal village of Langesund, Krogshavn is a vibrant public beach area with something for everyone. Multiple shallow beaches, smooth rocks, floating piers and bathing ladders invite to hours of water fun. Bridges, benches and BBQ areas make it easy to spend the whole day here. The area is fully accessible with paved paths, HC ramps and adapted toilet facilities.

Getting there: Follow Bambleveien towards Langesund, then HP Jacobsens gate and Th.J. Thoresens gate to the large parking area with HC parking.
6. Straand Summerland in Vrådal – lakeside fun park
Nestled by lake Nisser, just below Straand Hotel, lies Straand Summerland – a summer haven for the whole family. Swim from the sandy beach, bounce on the water trampoline or play on the open grassy fields. For the brave: climb the 12-meter-high tower overlooking the lake. The sightseeing boat M/S Fram docks right nearby for a scenic trip on the water.
Facilities: Outdoor restaurant (seasonal), climbing tower (requires climbing certification), boat and bike rentals, water trampoline, playground.
Getting there: Located by the lakeside just below Straand Hotel in Vrådal.
7. Brøndstadbukta in Porsgrunn – calm family beach by the fjord
Located in a sheltered fjord bay in Bergsbygda, Brøndstadbukta is ideal for families with children. Enjoy shallow water, soft lawns, rocky areas and a floating pier with a diving tower. The area is wheelchair accessible, with its own HC ramp and toilet, making it a safe and welcoming beach for all.

8. Lake Follsjø in Notodden – lakeside peace and fishing fun
A local favourite, Lake Follsjø is a peaceful lake surrounded by nature. Swim in the clear, fresh water, sunbathe on the rocks or enjoy a quiet moment with a fishing rod in hand – large trout are known to live here! The area has modern facilities, including HC-accessible toilets and grills.

Getting there: From Notodden, follow E134 towards Kongsberg, then follow signs to Bolkesjø and continue along FV602. Parking lot fits approx. 60 cars.
9. Ivarsand in Bamble – peaceful beach surrounded by nature
With shallow, clear waters and a calm atmosphere, Ivarsand is ideal for families with young children and nature enthusiasts. Enjoy well-maintained hiking trails, fishing spots, and a universally designed service building with HC toilets.

Getting there: From E18, exit onto Europaveien/Fv363, turn onto Valleveien, then follow Elvikveien. Parking is on the right-hand side.
10. Hulfjell Waterpark in Drangedal – splash, laughter and summer thrills
Looking for action and adventure? Head to Hulfjell Waterpark – one of Southern Norway’s largest floating water parks! With trampolines, climbing towers and obstacle courses, this is the ultimate water challenge for both kids and adults. From the Monkeybar to the Half Pipe, you’ll be laughing, splashing and moving non-stop.
The park is supervised, and all participants wear a life vest. Minimum age: 6 years and 110 cm tall. After swimming, visit the on-site family animal park or rent a canoe or pedal boat.

Getting there: About 5 minutes south of Drangedal by car. Follow signs and continue approx. 1 km on a gravel road. Parking included in entry.
