About

Søndre Brekke Estate & Brekke Park – Cultural History, Manor Life & Floral Splendor
Located in the heart of Skien, Søndre Brekke Estate is a magnificent Empire-style manor surrounded by Brekke Park (Brekkeparken)—the city's beloved public park since 1909. Here, grand manor history from 1814 meets local folk culture, intriguing legends, and renowned floral beauty.

Ever since the museum opened its doors over a century ago, it has been one of Telemark’s most popular destinations for history enthusiasts, families, and travelers alike.

History & The Manor House

Niels Aall and his Role in 1814

The main building at Søndre Brekke Estate has been restored in the Empire style, reflecting how Minister of Trade Niels Aall and his family lived during the first half of the 19th century.

  • The Minister of Trade: Niels Aall purchased the grand property in 1810 and later sold it to his son, Hans Aall, in 1830.
  • Historical Significance: Niels Aall played a central role as Minister of Trade during the negotiations for Norway’s Constitution at Eidsvoll in 1814. Guided museum tours highlight his influential story.

The Legend of the "Grey Lady" (Den Grå Dame)

No manor house is complete without its ghost! Søndre Brekke Estate is famous for the legends surrounding "The Grey Lady"—a phantom who has fascinated visitors and locals for generations.

  • The Mystery: Opinions differ regarding who this mysterious woman actually was, but all accounts link her to the Danish-Norwegian Prince Christian Frederik (later King of Norway), who visited the estate as Governor-General in 1813.

Brekke Park – An English Landscape Garden & Open-Air Museum

Spectacular Floral Displays

Brekke Park is celebrated for its vibrant and lavish gardens:

  • Spring: Thousands of colorful tulips bloom throughout May.
  • Summer: Beautiful summer flowers adorn the park, which is designed in the classic English landscape style.

The Open-Air Museum & Buildings

The park features a vibrant open-air museum showcasing 14 historic farm buildings relocated from various parts of Telemark. These structures illustrate the region's traditional architecture and living conditions over centuries.

In addition to the farmhouses, visitors can explore:

  • A cozy worker's home from the early 1900s.
  • An authentic general store from Kleiva.
  • A historic playhouse, music pavilion, and picturesque duck pond.
  • A modern, fun playground for children.

Practical Information

  • Season & Opening Hours: Brekke Park is open to the public throughout the summer season.
