Discover Skien city center in a unique way. Follow the Cultural Path, a 1.8 km long trail that takes you along the historic waters of Hjellevannet and Bryggevannet. This easy walk is suitable for everyone and offers a fascinating insight into the city's growth and rich history, from sawmills and trade to dramatic events and impressive art.
The Cultural Path is a perfect starting point to understand why Skien emerged right here. The difference in elevation between the two lakes created a natural meeting point for trade and industry. The trail begins at Bakkestranda, one of Skien's green gems, known for its rehabilitated wooden houses and as a popular spot for swimming in the summer and beautiful winter walks.
Along the path, you'll find seven illustrated information signs that tell short but captivating stories about the area. Learn about:
Several elements along the path are part of the MORILD light project and are beautifully illuminated in the evening. See the fountains in Bryggevannet and the artistic "roots" at Bakkestranda. The trail also features Trygve Barstad's well-known timber floater monument, "Gjennom foss" (Through the Waterfall), which honors the city's log floating history.
