Teater Ibsen has delivered unforgettable theatre experiences and unique moments since its establishment in 1975. As the official regional theatre for Telemark and Vestfold, we offer a varied program of performances and events for both children and adults throughout the year.
Our main building is beautifully situated on Klosterøya in Skien, but we are proud to be the theatre of the entire region. Therefore, you can experience our productions in a number of municipalities across Telemark and Vestfold.
Although our heart is at Klosterøya in Skien, Teater Ibsen tours frequently to reach audiences throughout the region. You can experience our theatre performances in places including:
Telemark: Bø, Seljord, Rjukan, Notodden, Åmot, Dalen, Fyresdal, and Drangedal.
Vestfold: Horten, Sandefjord, Nøtterøy, and Larvik.

Our modern and functional theatre house is located right by the waterfront on Klosterøya, just outside Skien city centre.
Public Transport: Take the bus to the Klosterøya stop.
Bicycle: Dedicated bicycle parking is available outside the theatre, and Farte offers a rental station for their yellow electric bikes at the entrance to Klosterøya.
Car: Ample access to toll parking spaces around the theatre. Payment is made easily via the automated machine or the EasyPark app.
Accessible Parking (Handicap): Dedicated marked spaces are available.
Get into the right theatrical mood before the performance! The theatre's bar is a popular meeting place and is centrally located in the house's foyer. The foyer is also the venue for our additional events, such as debates, themed evenings, and conversations.
Teater Ibsen has two stages:
The Main Hall: Capacity of 162 audience members.
The Intimate Stage (2nd floor): Space for up to 80 people for smaller productions and events.
Teater Ibsen was established in 1975 under the name Telemark Teater. The name change to Teater Ibsen occurred in 1991 when we expanded to become the regional theatre for both Telemark and Vestfold.
After many years at Festiviteten in Skien, the theatre moved in 2011 into today's dedicated and modern theatre house on Klosterøya. In 2025, we proudly marked our 50th anniversary of continuously delivering theatrical history and performing arts.
