Spring is on its way! The sun is peeking out, and we’re heading for the coast. Hiking boots are laced up, the boat is being prepped, and we’re pulling the kayak out from the back of the shed.
But spring is also the season of birds. It's time for courtship, nest-building, and egg-laying – in other words, it’s seabird nesting season. That’s why there is a travel ban in the seabird reserves along our coast from April 15 to July 15. We hope everyone will follow the County Governor’s advice to respect the ban on landing and traveling closer than 50 meters from shore in these areas. Keep in mind, this also applies to quiet activities like kayaking.
Wondering where the travel ban applies? See the map of seabird reserves below.
Also remember that dogs must be kept on a leash from April 1 to August 20.
Seabird Guidelines – take care of our seabirds!
Did you know there are special guidelines for protecting seabirds? The County Governor has outlined five simple rules to help us respect nesting seabirds:
- Check the map of seabird reserves – plan your trip well.
- Be prepared for nesting seabirds – avoid unnecessary disturbances.
- There’s no shame in changing course – respect the birds’ territories.
- Listen to local experts – they know where the birds nest.
- Show respect for nature – we share the coast with seabirds.
Let’s enjoy the archipelago in a way that also gives seabirds a safe nesting season!
