This is a great, family-friendly summit trip! Mount Venelifjellet – literally “the beautiful mountain” – carries its name well and is a popular hiking destination in Vrådal and Telemark.
Start the trip at the car park in Bendiksmyr. The footpath follows footbridges across the marshes and then on to rocky ground until you reach Lake
Venelitjørni. There you can stop for a rest in the gapahuk, try your luck at fishing in the lake or go for a refreshing swim. It is a great place for children to wait if they do not want to walk all the way to the summit.
From Lake Venelitjørni follow the trail to the top of the mountain, 904 m above sea level. On a clear day you can see all the way to the ocean and Kragerø, the Hardangervidda mountains and Mount Gaustatoppen.

The trail passes through a variety of mountain forest types. This is moose territory! On the northern side of Mount Veneli you follow an old packhorse and bridle path through virgin forests, now a protected spruce forest. The trail passes two summer mountain outfarms where the more than 100-year old log cabins still can be seen. Outfarm Veneli is open for visits. Between Tjørnstøyl and Venelistøyl lies “The Large Rock”, left after the last ice age. It is 10 m high and weighs over 1,000 tons.
Follow route RV41 to Flaten (2.3 km south of Straand), turn left at the sign for “Venelifjell”. Then follow the private road for 1.5 km until you reach the toll box. Please note that NOK 60,- has to paid in cash when passing the toll box. From there carry on straight ahead for 3 km to the car park in Bendiksmyr.
