About

Bliva Bathing Spot (Bliva badeplass) is an idyllic and family-friendly swimming area located in the northern part of Skien municipality, beautifully situated by the Bøelva river. This popular destination is known for its shallow bathing water and peaceful setting, perfect for families with children and those seeking a relaxing day outdoors.

The river bottom consists of soft sand and gravel, which has accumulated where the water flows gently. The lovely grass areas on both sides of the river are ideal for playing, sunbathing, and picnics/rest stops.

Facilities and Accessibility

Bliva Bathing Spot is well-equipped for visitors:

  • Toilet and waste disposal bins near the parking lot.
  • Parking is available.
  • The bathing water is shallow and child-friendly.

Directions to Bliva Bathing Spot

Bliva Bathing Spot is located approximately 13 km from Skien city center.

  • By Car: Follow Hoppestadveien from Skien center, then continue onto Valebøveien. Follow the signs towards Bliva.

Hiking Tips and Nature Experiences

Bliva is an excellent starting point for hikes into the beautiful Vestmarka area. If you want a break from swimming and sunbathing, we recommend:

  • Geitebuvarden: A marked hiking trail with fantastic views from the summit.
  • Skådalen
  • Smørhullet and Bygdeborgen på Bjordamskollen (The hillside fort at Bjordamskollen)

These are great locations for mountain hikes, trekking, and nature experiences in Telemark.

Fishing in Bøelva

The Bøelva river at Bliva is an exciting place for river fishing.

  • Fish Species: The river is salmon-bearing, and you can hook salmon and sea trout.
  • Permit: Members of Grenland Sportsfiskere (Grenland Sport Fishermen's Association) have fishing permission.
  • Fishing Fee: All anglers over the age of 18 must pay a state fishing fee to fish in salmon-bearing watercourses.

A Bit of History

Bliva has a rich history as a popular recreational area.

  • The Bratsbergbanen railway, which runs between Porsgrunn, Skien, and Notodden, passes the bathing spot.
  • Train Stop: In the past, it was common for the train to stop by agreement on the tracks to drop off bathers. This made Bliva a popular destination for fun full-day trips for families and friends from the city.
