Børsesjø Nature Reserve is one of Telemark’s most valuable wetland areas. Featuring rich birdlife, diverse vegetation, accessible hiking trails, and a dedicated birdwatching tower, Børsesjø is an ideal destination for birdwatchers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts.

Wildlife and Nature at Børsesjø

Børsesjø has an average depth of 2.1 meters and a maximum depth of 4.8 meters. This shallow lake environment provides optimal conditions for a thriving ecosystem:

• Over 230 Bird Species: The area is recognized as one of the region’s most diverse birding locations.
• Vital Breeding and Staging Ground: The lake serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds and a safe nesting site for wetland species.
• Key Feeding Area: The wetlands provide abundant nutrition year-round for a wide variety of birds and mammals.

Facilities and Visitor Access

The reserve is thoughtfully designed for visitors to experience nature up close while protecting local wildlife:

• Bird Observation Tower: A elevated tower offers panoramic views across the lake and its birdlife.
• Nature Trail and Information: Dedicated trails featuring informational panels highlight the reserve’s flora and fauna.
• Access Point: Børsesjø is best accessed near Gjerpen Church. A marked trail runs from between Gjerpen Care Home and the Vicarage directly to the birdwatching tower.

Protection Rules and Regulations

Børsesjø is protected to preserve its sensitive wetland ecosystem. Visitors must adhere to the following rules:

• Seasonal Access Restrictions: Public access within the reserve is prohibited from April 15 to July 1, except on the designated marked trail leading to the observation tower.
• Hunting Prohibition: Hunting is strictly forbidden throughout the reserve.
• Fishing Regulations: Fishing is banned during early summer. Fishing at other times of the year requires explicit permission from landowners.
