Søndre Brekke Estate & Brekke Park – Cultural History, Manor Life & Floral Splendor
Located in the heart of Skien, Søndre Brekke Estate is a magnificent Empire-style manor surrounded by Brekke Park (Brekkeparken)—the city's beloved public park since 1909. Here, grand manor history from 1814 meets local folk culture, intriguing legends, and renowned floral beauty.
Ever since the museum opened its doors over a century ago, it has been one of Telemark’s most popular destinations for history enthusiasts, families, and travelers alike.
The main building at Søndre Brekke Estate has been restored in the Empire style, reflecting how Minister of Trade Niels Aall and his family lived during the first half of the 19th century.
No manor house is complete without its ghost! Søndre Brekke Estate is famous for the legends surrounding "The Grey Lady"—a phantom who has fascinated visitors and locals for generations.
Brekke Park is celebrated for its vibrant and lavish gardens:
The park features a vibrant open-air museum showcasing 14 historic farm buildings relocated from various parts of Telemark. These structures illustrate the region's traditional architecture and living conditions over centuries.
In addition to the farmhouses, visitors can explore:
