124 kmExplore the heart of Telemark on two wheels! This 2-day bikepacking loop offers a diverse journey through deep forests, mountain passes, and UNESCO World Heritage industrial sites. With excellent public transport links, this is the perfect sustainable adventure for cyclists seeking a blend of nature and culture.
Route Overview
Duration: 2 Days (recommended)
Terrain: Varied (mostly asphalt with gravel sections)
Max Incline: Approx. 7% (climb to Resjemheia)
Starting Points: Bø Station or Notodden Transport Hub.
Starting from Notodden, the route follows the "Power Chain"—a series of massive dams and power stations including Svelgfoss, Grønvollfoss, and Årlifoss. These sites are part of the industrial legacy that put this region on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Keep an eye out for the Tinnoset Line (Tinnosbanen). This railway was a critical link for the Rjukan industrial plants and is world-famous for the WWII heavy water sabotage mission.
As you cycle through the rolling countryside, look for the historic telegraph lines with porcelain insulators still lining the old roads. This area is rich in traditional Norwegian farm architecture and scenic woodland.
The day’s main challenge begins at Yli with the ascent to Resjemheia, on the edge of the Lifjell mountain range.
The Climb: A steady 7% gradient.
For the Adventurous: Take a detour on foot to discover high peaks and crystal-clear mountain rivers.
Camping: This area is ideal for those looking to spend the night under the stars in the wild.
Descending from the mountains, the route passes Bø Sommarland (Scandinavia's largest water park) before heading toward the lush village of Akkerhaugen.
Culture Stop: Visit Evju Bygdetun, a traditional farm museum. Learn about the intricate weaving traditions and folk costumes ("stakk") that the region is famous for.
From Akkerhaugen, you climb back toward Resjem. Enjoy breathtaking views of lake Nordsjø, the lake that gathers Telemark’s many rivers into one. On the descent back to Notodden, you’ll see the expansive Heddalsvannet.
Note: Use caution as the cycling path crosses the runway of Notodden Airport!
Before finishing your journey, take a short detour to Heddal Stave Church—Norway's largest and most iconic medieval wooden church. End your trip in the "Blues Town" of Notodden with a visit to the Bok & Blueshuset for a celebratory coffee and a finisher selfie.
Bike Choice: Due to the gravel sections, a gravel bike or a hybrid with at least 32mm tires is recommended.
Accessibility: Both Bø and Notodden are easily reached by train or bus from Oslo, making this a car-free friendly trip.
