The island is owned by the municipality of Bamble and most of it is a landscape protection area managed by the County Governor of Telemark. The Langøytangen lighthouse is located on Langøya and is a well-known landmark for Langesund. Here there is a coastal cabin (old lighthouse residence) that can be rented for accommodation.

The island has a diverse history and exciting flora with several rare species. It has long been used as a recreation area by locals and by visitors. Much of the island was overgrown and a lot of ticks came there so then the island lost much of its interest as a recreation area. With great effort from the municipality of Bamble and the County Governor of Telemark, this has now completely changed.

Much vegetation has been removed, lawns and some paths are being mowed and cows have been put out to keep the vegetation down. Kyra is set north on the island. The areas are fenced, but the coastal path also passes through them. There are fence splits and gates through the fences. The work to "open up" the island will continue according to a separate management plan under the auspices of the County Governor.

With its own football pitch, swimming beaches, fishing grounds etc. is the activity opportunities on the island are very many. The trail on the island is made like a circular trail.

It is part of the coastal path through Bamble. Bamble Turlag has cleared the trail and been responsible for marking with standard blue color according to guidelines from the Norwegian Tourist Association. Most of the trail goes through landscaping area. It is important that users take this into account and follow the instructions that the County Governor has put up on their own boards around the island.

The walk is very easy to walk, but be aware that you have to go over some "fence cleavers" which can be a challenge for some with movement problems. It is possible to take a detour from the coastal path.

Especially recommended then to visit the Langøytangen lighthouse at the southern tip of the island. Beaches in the northwest and the island of Lilløy in the east are also recommended. In the summer season there will be an open restaurant and boat across to the island. It is the Helgeroa ferries that run by the pier. Schedules and prices from 23of June.
