About

The Frierstien Trail is a beautiful, blue-marked hiking route connecting scenic areas along the Frierfjord on the western side of the Eidanger Peninsula in Porsgrunn. This trail has deep historical roots, as parts of it have been used for millennia for settlements, fishing, and forestry. Today, outdoor enthusiasts maintain the trail, enjoying the lush forest and the many splendid viewpoints.

Main Route and Extension Opportunities

  • Main Stretch: The Frierstien is an excellent hike spanning approximately 9–10 km. It runs between Herøya in Porsgrunn and Dammane in Brevik.
  • Marking: The trail is blue-marked and signposted by POT (Porsgrunn and Vicinity Tourist Association), ensuring easy navigation.
  • Extension: The trip can easily be extended! From Dammane, you can follow the continuous Coastal Path (Kyststien) towards Heistad, Skjelsvik, or Mule Varde for an even longer nature experience.

Practical Transport and Parking

Public Transport: If you walk the entire 9–10 km stretch, you can easily take the bus back to your starting point. There are bus stops near the trail both at Dammane in Brevik and at Herøya.

Parking:

  • Starting from Herøya: Park at Herøyahuset. From the parking lot, it is easy to find the trail start. Walk out onto Torggata, take the second road to the right, and follow Axels Auberts gate to the end—this is where the Frierstien begins.
  • Starting from Brevik: Park at the public parking area by Dammane and follow the blue-marked trail towards Herøya.
  • Halfway Point: For those who wish to walk only half the distance, it may be possible to find parking near the entrance to the Kjørholt Tunnel (Kjørholttunnelen).

Map Suggestion: We recommend checking maps that cover Porsgrunn–Oklungen–Langesundbukta–Frierfjorden–Langangen for a complete overview of the route.

Responsible Travel in Nature

As a hiker, it is crucial to practice responsible conduct to preserve the natural environment. Be environmentally conscious: follow marked trails, avoid damaging ecosystems, take all litter with you, and respect local rules and wildlife.
