Historia om busettinga ved Buffalo River – heilt nord i Minnesota, ikkje langt frå dobbelbyen Fargo/Moorhead – er legendarisk heilt sidan 1909, då Torkel Oftelie omtala ho i første utgåve av Telesoga.
Sentral i denne forteljinga står familien Geitestad (seinare Thortvedt) frå Fyresdal som utvandra til Midtvesten i 1861. Etter nesten 10 år i Houston County starta dei det legendariske Red River Trek – ei pionérvandring til dei ubygde slettene mellom Red River og Buffalo River, der dei slo seg ned i 1870.
Historia er dokumentert av kunstnaren Orabel Thortvedt (1896-1983) gjennom tallause måleri, teikningar og utklippsbøker. Det er dette materialet historia blir fortalt gjennom, både i utstillinga og som ei praktbok.
