History

Visit these places for an insight into Skien’s exciting history.

  1. Snipetorp is Skien's oldest residential after the city fires in 1854 and 1886.
  2. Skien church was completed in 1894 after the great town fire.
  3. Skien sluse is the first lock in the Telemark Canal, with connection between Skienselva and Hjellevannet.
  4. The district of Skotfoss in Skien was mainly built about 1900 around the paper factory Skotfoss Bruk.
  5. Church ruins after the mighty Dagsætten (ancestry) in Skien. From the 1100s.
  6. Mosaikk - hidden pearls in the centre of Skien.
  7. The City Hall in Skien was completed in 1894 and was designed by the architects Peter Lowzow and Hagbarth Schytte-Berg.
  8. A circular trail of 5.6 km around Hjellevannet lake.
  9. In the summer of 1835, Knud Ibsen moved with his family from Skien down town to Venstøp, 5 km north of Skien, on the farm Erlands Venstøp.
