The 7 km long Skarsvegen runs from Svartdal to Åmotsdal. Historically, it was the main road from Seljord towards Rauland and West Telemark. Today, it is a nationally protected 19th-century road, ideal for hiking.
Along the route, you can experience both natural and cultural landscapes, including traces of old settlements.
Distance: 7 km one way
Duration: 4 hours
Difficulty level: Moderate
Surface: Gravel road, tractor track, and trail
This hike is well suited as a day trip, either with transportation arranged at one end or as a round trip. Along the route, you’ll find many signs with information about this historic travel route between the villages.
The hike is best suited for spring, summer, and autumn. It is suitable for most people, as the terrain generally features a steady incline. Remember to wear good shoes and bring enough food and water.
It is also possible to shorten the hike by turning down into Dyrlandsdalen. On Sundays, you can enjoy coffee and baked goods at the SkuleHuset in Dyrlandsdalen.
You can choose to start the hike either in Svartdal or from Fossheim in Åmotsdal.
For those who prefer a gentler ascent, it is recommended to start from Åmotsdal and walk towards Svartdal.
Drive from Seljord town centre along the E134 towards Flatdal. Turn onto Sogevegen via Nutheim and follow the signs to Svartdal. Turn off towards Svartdal and follow Svartdalsvegen for about 2 km until you see signs for Skarsvegen on the left-hand side.
Park in a lay-by along the road.
If starting from Åmotsdal, you can park along Heivegen.
