Olav S. Nordbø and his wife Lorima runs the mountain dairy farm at the top of Hjartdalheiane. In the summer their daughters April, Åse Marit and Miriam join them. It is located around 700 meters above sea level in an old pasture area. The cows move up to the summer pasture around Jonsok midsummer and stay there until mid-August. The animals build muscles and rejuvenate in the mountains. The mountain grass is fresh and nutritious which improves welfare and milk yield. From the milk they make mountain cheese, butter, sour cream, sour milk cheese and spreadable brown cheese.

Hospitality is an olden virtue, and you are welcome to visit the mountain dairy farm Bjordal, which belongs to Nordbø farm in Hjartdal. Here you can buy coffee, cordial and waffles. Sour cream porridge can be ordered beforehand. Ideally combined with a hike, then it is extra tasty. Please note there is only cash payment.

You will enter an old shepard’s area, allowing you to see how people have taken care of their livestock for generations. In the area there are several mountain dairy farms, which were used earlier in the spring. When it was time for the livestock to go back home, they were gathered and herded back home. The final trip was called “hevdetur”, which translates to fertilizer trip. This was an important measure to ensure a good grass yield.
