About

Experience the demanding yet rewarding Skarsvegen Cycling Tour, a gem for mountain bikers seeking both challenge and history in the heart of Telemark, Norway.

The journey starts at the Nutheim Gjestgiveri, often referred to as the Artists' Hotel in Telemark. The initial stretch follows a public road, immediately offering a magnificent view overlooking Flatdal. Heading through Svartdal, you first follow a quiet asphalt road before turning onto a gravel road.

The Skarsvegen itself – as the name suggests – takes you over a mountain pass (a "skar"). This is an old transport route dating back to the 1800s century that is remarkably well-preserved, and you will spot many authentic remnants of historical activity along the route. The path/trail is classified as a nationally preserved road monument, and you will find informative signage with text and pictures detailing the road's exciting history.

The route largely passes through forested terrain with a varied and technically demanding surface. You will encounter forest floor, rocky sections, and some marshland. After completing Skarsvegen, you descend onto a stretch of gravel road and finally reach the asphalt road in Åmotsdalen.

Difficulty Level: The tour is demanding and requires high cycling skills. You must expect to push/carry the bike on uphill sections, especially during the crossing over the mountain pass. A mountain bike (MTB) with good suspension and gearing is absolutely necessary. The trip is best suited for experienced cyclists who are comfortable handling technical terrain.
