Børja Hill Fort (Bygdeborgen Børja) is a fascinating historical gem in Siljan, strategically located on the northern tip of a peninsula jutting out into the beautiful Lake Gorningen. This well-preserved hill fort is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of Siljan, archaeology, and nature trails in Telemark.

About Børja: Size and Age

The Børja Hill Fort covers an area of approximately five mål (about 0.5 hectares/1.2 acres), making it a medium-sized fort in a national context.

• Age and Dating: The fort is difficult to date precisely. It may originate from the period 400 to 600 years after Christ, but some estimates suggest it could be as old as 2,000 years or even older.
• Defensive Structures: Three sides of the fort are naturally protected by deep cliffs, which made intrusion very difficult. The fourth side was defended by a clear and well-marked stone wall of masonry and stone, measuring about 2-3 meters wide and 1-1.5 meters high.
• Current Condition: Remnants of the old stone walls are still visible on the hill, appearing today as low stone rows that testify to the fort's former grandeur.

Access and Visit

Visiting the Børja Hill Fort is a great hike in Siljan with good accessibility.

• Parking: A dedicated parking area has been established at Damstua.
• Trail: From the parking lot, follow a nice and clearly marked path north along the shore and out to the peninsula.
• Facilities: To cross the damp ground near the fort, a nice wooden bridge has been built. Information signs have been erected to provide insight into the fort's history.
