Distance: Approx. 20 km (one way)
Route: Part of National Cycle Route 1 (The Coastal Route)
Difficulty: Moderate (includes some steep hills and gravel sections)
Highlights: Langesund, Rognstranda Beach, and UNESCO Geopark
The tour begins in Langesund, a premier summer destination in Telemark. Many cyclists arrive via the cycling ferry from Helgeroa (operating from mid-June to mid-August), which serves as a scenic gateway to the region.
Recommended Detour in Langesund: Ride through Vaterlandsgate to admire the idyllic traditional wooden houses. At the very tip of the peninsula, you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Langesund Fjord and the open sea.
This route travels through a landscape of immense geological importance. Stop at Steinvika or Rognstranda to find ancient fossils and learn about Earth's history through the well-placed information boards.
About 5 km into the trip, follow the signs toward Rognstranda. Frequently cited as one of the best beaches in the country, it is the perfect spot for a break or a swim.
Note: The descent to the beach is quite steep, so ensure your brakes are in good condition!
After leaving the coast briefly, the route enters a well-marked forest section.
Caution: Be careful on the particularly steep and gravelly downhill section before you rejoin the paved road toward Valle.
If you want to extend your stay or enjoy a night by the sea, there are excellent camping options along the way:
Kjønnøya Camping: Located about 7 km after the Åby junction. A beautiful site with tent pitches and a few cabins.
Brevigstrand Camping: Offers great facilities for camping and easy access to the water.
Upon reaching Valle, you will find a bustling coastal hub (active from Easter through September) featuring:
From Valle, you have several exciting options:
Return: Cycle back the same way to Langesund.
Toward Kragerø: Continue on Cycle Route 1 (expect some climbs and narrow paved roads).
Signage: Look for the red signs marked "Sykkelrute 1".
Safety: Use caution on the road toward Valle, as it can have significant car traffic during the summer.
