Dammane in Brevik (The Ponds) served as Brevik’s historic drinking water source, completed in 1884. Today, this area constitutes a fantastic and popular hiking destination featuring excellent trails set within a beautiful, varied, and hilly terrain. The entirety of Dammane and the surrounding area holds the status of an important Landscape Protection Area (Landskapsvernområde), making it a perfect spot for nature experiences in Telemark/Grenland.
From Dammane, marked trails lead to exciting excursion destinations:
Trail to Prekestolen (The Pulpit Rock): A popular route. Exercise extra caution here, as it is extremely steep beneath the main cliff with a long drop to the sea.
Fantastic Views: From Prekestolen, you get a spectacular view over large parts of Frierfjorden (Frier Fjord) and the petrochemical plants on the Bamble side.
Ole Høiland's Cave: The path also continues to the historical Ole Høiland's Cave. NOTE! The cave is difficult to access and requires careful navigation.
It is permitted to cycle in the area, but to preserve vulnerable nature, it is strongly recommended to stick to the main paths. This minimizes wear and tear and contributes to the preservation of the ecosystems.
Information Boards: You will find several boards featuring information signs and maps covering both the Landscape Protection Area and the nature reserve.
Accessibility for Disabled Visitors: Parts of the area are adapted for disabled visitors, but please note there is some incline from the parking lot up to the trails.
There are two main ways to reach Dammane by car:
Bus: Take bus M1 to the Furulund stop. From the stop, it is only a 240-meter walk to the main trail.
To preserve this beautiful nature reserve and Landscape Protection Area for future generations, responsible travel is crucial.
Follow Trails: Stick to marked trails to avoid damaging vulnerable ecosystems.
Leave No Trace: Take all trash with you to keep the area clean.
Respect Rules: Follow local rules and regulations for the Landscape Protection Area.
Do Not Disturb: Be mindful of the wildlife and avoid disturbing it.
