The Telemark Canal is one of Norway’s most spectacular travel routes – a historic waterway winding through lakes, locks and dramatic landscapes from Skien to Dalen. Along the way, you can enjoy everything from scenic boat trips and paddling to cycling, with stops at small villages, attractions and viewpoints.
Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with family or with friends, the Telemark Canal offers a memorable journey through the heart of Telemark.
Experience the Telemark Canal from the water
The classic way to experience the Telemark Canal is from the water, bringing you close to both the surrounding nature and the remarkable engineering that makes the canal so special.
A journey aboard the historic canal boats M/S Victoria or M/S Henrik Ibsen takes you at a leisurely pace through locks and lakes. Along the way, you can watch as the boats are raised and lowered through the impressive lock systems – one of the highlights of the journey.
For more freedom, explore the canal in your own boat or rent one from operators such as Canal Boats Telemark. This gives you the flexibility to travel at your own pace and stop wherever you like.
For a more active experience, kayaking is a popular choice. Paddle quietly through the landscape, surrounded by nature as you make your way between the locks and lakes.
