About

Join us on a historic hike to Øverbø, the farmstead where the skiing legend Sondre Norheim was born in 1825. This is more than just a hike through a beautiful cultural landscape; it is a journey to the very origins of modern skiing. It was here, in the cottage at Øverbø, that the world’s first Olympic flame for the Winter Games was lit.

Trip Details:

  • Difficulty: Easy (Family-friendly)
  • Terrain: Nature trail and local village roads
  • Highlights: Sondre Norheim’s birthplace and panoramic views of Morgedal

Discover the History of Skiing

Morgedal is known as "The Cradle of Skiing." It was in the steep slopes surrounding Øverbø that terms like slalom, Telemark turn, and Telemark landing originated.

When you reach the farmstead at Øverbø, you can enjoy your packed lunch while taking in the magnificent view of the valley. The site is steeped in history and is a perfect destination for both families and history enthusiasts.

Route Description and Starting Point

You can choose between two main routes starting from the Norsk Skieventyr (Norwegian Ski Adventure) museum:

  • The Nature Trail (approx. 2 km): Winds through forest terrain until you reach Morgedal Camping.
  • The Village Road (1 km): Follows an asphalt road directly to the campsite.

From Morgedal Camping, the trail continues through an open and scenic cultural landscape with a steady climb up to Øverbø. You can return the same way, or extend your hike:

  • Extra Viewpoint: Continue about 1 km further to Månin. Here you will find a traditional lean-to shelter (gapahuk) and a picnic area with panoramic views.
  • Short Version: For a shorter walk, you can start directly in Bjålandsgrendi.

How to Get There and Parking

  • Driving Directions: Turn off the E134 highway towards Morgedal. Follow the road past the COOP Market.
  • Parking: Ample parking is available at Norsk Skieventyr, Morgedal Camping, or at Bjåland (see local map).

Responsible Travel in a Historic Landscape

To preserve this unique cultural heritage for the future, we ask all visitors to practice responsible travel:

  • Stay on the Trail: Follow marked paths to protect the local ecosystem and agricultural lands.
  • Leave No Trace: Carry all trash back with you.
  • Show Respect: Please respect local wildlife and private property.

By practicing "Leave No Trace" principles, you help ensure that future generations can also experience the history and beauty of Sondre Norheim’s birthplace.
