Route Description: Where the Water is the Road

The experience starts even before you lace up your hiking boots.

  1. The Boat Trip with M/B Fjellvåken II: To reach Kvennavegen, take the scheduled boat from Skinnarbu to Mogen Turisthytte. It is a stunning journey through Norway’s highest-altitude parish.
  2. Along the Waterway: The trail is flat and features beautiful heartwood pine boardwalks that keep your feet dry across the marshland. Enjoy the sound of the rushing Kvenna river and perhaps take a refreshing dip from the smooth rocks.
  3. Hear the History: Don't miss the "talking post"! Here you can listen to stories from the local residents about life in this roadless mountain community.
  4. View of Argehovd: From the trail, you can see the remote Argehovd farm. It is still in full operation today—located 30 kilometers from the nearest road.

Experiences at Kvennavegen

  • Mogen Turisthytte: One of the oldest and most beloved cabins on Hardangervidda. Ideal for a coffee break or a dinner made from local ingredients.
  • Fishing: The Kvenna river is famous for its trout. Why not try your luck and cook a fresh catch over a campfire in the evening?
  • Realm of the Wild Reindeer: You are now at the edge of Northern Europe’s largest high-mountain plateau, home to the continent’s largest wild reindeer herds.

Practical Information

  • Access: Drive to Skinnarbu (on Road 37) and take the boat Fjellvåken II to Mogen. Be sure to check the boat schedule in advance!
  • Food & Accommodation: Both Mogen and Møsstrond Turisthytte offer meals and beds for those who wish to extend their stay in the National Park.

Responsible Travel in the National Park

Hardangervidda is a fragile ecosystem. To protect the nature and wildlife:

  • Stay on the paths: By using the boardwalks, you protect the wetlands and rare Arctic plants.
  • Respect Privacy: Remember that the mountain farms at Møsstrond are active farms and private homes.
  • Leave No Trace: In the National Park, we leave nothing but footprints.
