Sildevika is an idyllic outdoor recreation area and a popular coastal cabin (kystledhytte) located in Porsgrunn Municipality, Telemark. The area is beautifully situated on the mainland by the Ormerfjorden, only six miles (one Norwegian mile) from Porsgrunn city center. Sildevika offers a perfect blend of accessibility and tranquility, ideal for those seeking nature experiences by the sea.

Outdoor Life and Hiking in Sildevika

Sildevika is a hub for active outdoor life and hiking. Here you will find varied scenery with both smooth rocks (svaberg) and a beautiful sandy beach.

  • Activities: You can go swimming, fishing (from the jetty or near the small islands Matholmene), camping (on large grassy areas), paddling (a rowing boat can be rented during the season), barbecuing, and playing.
  • Hiking Opportunities: The area features a good selection of trails. A blue-marked summer trail (10 km) passes right by the coastal cabin. Work is also underway to connect Sildevika to the Coastal Path (Kyststien) in Vestfold.
  • Viewpoints: Explore nearby peaks that offer fantastic views over the fjord areas:
    • Plasseråsen: A well-known nautical landmark and great viewpoint.
    • Other areas: Isdammen near Bjønnes – Solvika and the ice house ruins at Solvika, Bjønnes – Solvika, and Lajordet.

Renting the Sildevika Coastal Cabin (DNT)

The old farmhouse in Sildevika is operated by DNT Telemark as a popular, unstaffed coastal cabin (kystledhytte).

Important Information about Rentals:

  • Operated by: DNT Telemark (Telemark Tourist Association).
  • Capacity: The cabin accommodates 13 people (as of 2021).
  • Rental Period: From April 15th to September 15th.
  • Booking: Stays must be booked in advance with DNT Telemark.
  • Contact DNT: Call phone 35 53 25 55 or send an email to telemark@dnt.no.
  • Facilities: The area offers excellent fishing opportunities, and a rowing boat can be rented during the season.

How to Get to Sildevika

Sildevika is easily accessible on foot, by bus, or by boat:

  • On Foot (after parking): Follow the road and the path (approx. 15–20 minutes walking time) from:
    • Parking Krøsstangenveien
    • Parking Bjønnes
  • By Public Transport: Take the bus to the bus stop at Bjønnes. Check timetables on farte.no.
  • By Boat: Several good mooring options are available in the area.
