About

Notodden Historielag, established in 1981, is an active cultural and historical association based in Notodden municipality, Telemark. Since 1983, the society has published an annual yearbook featuring local history articles, photographs, and stories from the region.

According to its statutes, the society’s purpose is to “inspire interest in and understanding of the municipality’s history, share knowledge about our cultural heritage, and protect local cultural monuments.” Notodden Historielag plays a key role in preserving and promoting Notodden’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Cooperation with Norsk Industriarbeidermuseum

The society works closely with the Norsk Industriarbeidermuseum (Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum) to promote the area’s industrial and workers’ history. Together, they develop educational programs for local schools, aiming to engage children and young people in the region’s heritage and history.

Visit the Historielag House in Industrigata

The society’s own house at Industrigata 6 is a unique museum that shows how a typical working-class family lived in the early 1900s. The house is furnished with authentic period interiors and objects, and offers fascinating stories from local life.

The house is open every Thursday afternoon, and guided tours can also be arranged outside regular opening hours. The workers’ homes in the nearby Grønnbyen area are part of the Rjukan–Notodden World Heritage Site, which is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
