In southern Vest-Telemark, you'll find Nissedal, a beautiful area on the shores of Lake Nisser, surrounded by smooth rock formations and towering mountains such as Hægefjell and Kronfjell.

Lake Nisser is 35 kilometres long and 250 metres deep, making it the second-largest lake in Telemark. With its green spaces, long sandy beaches and smooth rocks along the shore, it's a popular place to spend warm summer days.

By the waterfront, you'll find plenty of places to relax and enjoy time with the family. The central recreation area has a water trampoline, table tennis, hammocks and a barbecue area, making it a great spot for a day by the lake.

Fjoneferja, Norway's smallest cable ferry, crosses the nearly 500-metre-wide Fjonesundet between Fjone and Framnes. It's a handy shortcut between the eastern and western shores of Lake Nisser.

The municipality takes its name from the lake. In Old Norse, Nisser was called Niðsær, meaning "the lower lake", while nearby Vråvatn was considered the upper lake.

At the southern end of the municipality, you'll find Jettegrytene, a natural summer playground with rock pools and smooth natural water slides.

Over thousands of years, the Fyresåna River carried stones and gravel through the riverbed, gradually carving round and oval hollows into the rock. These fascinating formations became visible when much of the river's water was diverted through pipes.

Today, the roughly 300-metre-long area is a popular swimming spot for locals and visitors alike. With sun-warmed rocks, natural pools and slides carved into the stone, it's a great place to spend a summer day.

Nissedal also has plenty to offer beyond outdoor activities. In Treungen, Z-Museum takes visitors on a journey through different periods of modern history, with more than 40 exhibitions covering an impressive range of objects and stories.

Here you'll find everything from vintage cars and motorcycles to old telephones and maps, and even a café decorated in authentic 1960s style. As the museum puts it, it's "a journey back in time for the whole family".
