About

On this day, Kulturkontoret invites the public to a very special concert experience at Rjukanhuset. It marks exactly 71 years to the day since the legendary Bösendorfer grand piano was inaugurated with a grand concert in 1955. The piano has now returned to the stage following an extensive restoration in Poland, and the anniversary will be marked with a formal re-inauguration concert.

The audience can look forward to an afternoon featuring some of Norway’s foremost musicians. It is particularly symbolic that the Barratt-Due family is once again taking the stage. Stephan Barratt-Due participated in the 1955 inauguration, and this time it is his son—violinist Stephan Barratt-Due—who will be coming to Rjukan. Together with pianist David Meier, they will perform selected works from the original 1955 concert program.

In addition to the concert, there will be presentations detailing the history of the grand piano and its restoration. Øystein Buen will provide an insight into the project, while Robert Jenbergsen will share photos and videos documenting the piano’s journey to Poland, its restoration, and its return to Rjukanhuset. Øystein Haugen will recount the story of how the grand piano arrived in Rjukan and the significance it has held for the town’s cultural life over more than seven decades. Free coffee and cake. Doors open at 15:45. Tickets—priced the same as they were in 1955—are available at Rjukankino.no.
