Spring is a special time to visit Jomfruland. In April and May, large parts of the island are covered in wood anemones, creating a carpet of white flowers that attracts visitors from across Norway.

Jomfruland is a great choice for a day trip, whether you're travelling with family, friends or as a couple. The 7.5-kilometre-long moraine island has plenty to offer beyond its spring flowers. Cycle or walk through oak forests and along the coast, visit the Jomfruland Towers and the bird observatory at Øitangen, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet of this beautiful island off the Telemark coast.

Wood anemones on Jomfruland – a beautiful sign of spring

Wood anemones grow in many parts of southern Norway, but few places have quite as many as Jomfruland. In the oak forest in the heart of the island, thousands of white flowers cover the woodland floor, marking the arrival of spring.

The flowers are one of the main reasons people visit Jomfruland in April and May, when the island comes to life after winter and is still quieter than during the summer months.

From Tårnbrygga, it's less than two kilometres to the oak forest. Many visitors combine the walk with a stop at the Jomfruland Towers and Tårntjernet, also known as Nøkkentjernet. According to local tradition, this small lake inspired Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen's paintings of Nøkken, a mythical water spirit from Norwegian folklore.

If you have time, continue towards Øitangen and the bird observatory. Here you'll find open meadows, coastal woodland and lovely views of the surrounding islands.

Jomfruland is part of the Gea Norvegica Geopark, known for its internationally significant geology. Parts of the island have also been protected as a national park since 2016.

Explore Jomfruland by bike

Jomfruland is flat and easy to explore, making it perfect for discovering by bike. From Tårnbrygga, scenic gravel roads and trails lead south towards the oak forest, Øitangen and the bird observatory, with short distances between the island’s highlights.

Along the way, you’ll pass the two distinctive Jomfruland Towers. The oldest lighthouse was first lit in 1839 and is now one of Telemark’s most important cultural heritage sites.

Just off the main road, you’ll find SykkelKnut and Knutepunktet bike rental. Bikes are available for both adults and children, and the team can offer tips on which routes are best suited to you. During busy periods, it’s a good idea to book your bike in advance.

For many visitors, meeting SykkelKnut is part of the Jomfruland experience. He knows the island inside out, is always happy to share stories from life on Jomfruland – and you might even leave with a few words of local wisdom to take with you.

Tips for a great spring trip to Jomfruland

Spring weather along the Telemark coast can change quickly, so it’s a good idea to dress in layers and wear sturdy footwear. Bring a packed lunch or plan a stop along the way to make the most of the first warm days of spring.

If you have time, be sure to visit the pebble beaches on the outer side of the island. The stones were carried here by the ice during the last Ice Age and have been rounded and smoothed by the sea over thousands of years. The contrast between the white carpets of wood anemones in the oak forest and the open coastal landscape makes Jomfruland a truly special spring destination.

If you’re travelling on sunny weekends, it’s a good idea to book both your ferry and bike well in advance. That way, you can spend more time exploring the island and less time dealing with logistics.

Whether you come for the wood anemone blooms, a bike ride or the peace and quiet by the sea, Jomfruland is one of the most beautiful places to experience spring in Telemark. Here, nature, cultural heritage and geology come together in a way that keeps visitors coming back year after year.
