Gjerpen Church is one of the oldest and most prominent landmark churches in Skien and Telemark, Norway. Featuring medieval origins, fine church art by Emanuel Vigeland, and a rich, dramatic history, it stands as a key cultural heritage site and local landmark.
History, Expansion, and Restoration
Gjerpen Church was originally built in the Middle Ages and dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several significant transformations:
- 1871–1872 Expansion: The church was substantially enlarged with two side aisles and a new characteristic tower to accommodate a growing congregation.
- 1920 Renovation: An extensive interior restoration added a striking altarpiece crafted by the renowned Norwegian artist Emanuel Vigeland.
- 2003 Fire and Reconstruction: The church suffered severe interior damage in an arson fire in 2003. Following a meticulous restoration project, the church is today fully restored to its former grandeur.
Gjerpen Cemetery: Historical Grounds
Gjerpen Cemetery carries notable Norwegian history. Among the historical gravesites located on the church grounds is the final resting place of Vidkun Quisling.
